Wildfire Season: 6 Things to Check in Your Homeowners Policy

In California, fire is usually covered by a standard homeowners policy. But the details of your policy decide how well you recover after a loss. Here are six things worth checking before you ever need them.
Your dwelling limit vs. today's rebuild cost. Construction costs have risen in recent years, so a limit set years ago may fall short. Ask whether you have extended replacement cost coverage, which adds a buffer above your limit.
Building code upgrades. A rebuilt home usually has to meet current building codes, which can cost more. This is often called ordinance or law coverage, and it is often limited. Check the amount.
Additional living expenses. If you can't live at home, this pays the extra cost of temporary housing and meals. Rebuilding after a major fire can take a long time, so check both the dollar limit and any time limit.
Your belongings and a home inventory. A room-by-room video of your home, saved online, makes a personal property claim much easier.
Debris removal, trees and landscaping. These are often covered under separate, smaller limits.
If you're on the California FAIR Plan. The FAIR Plan is a basic policy focused on fire. Many homeowners pair it with a "difference in conditions" policy to cover things like liability, theft and water damage.
Every policy is different
